Author Biographies

Anna-Marie White, The Suter Art Gallery, Nelson

Anna-Marie White is the Curator at The Suter Art Gallery in Nelson. In this role she develops around ten exhibitions per year drawn from The Suter’s collection or national sources and her curatorial approach is strongly influenced by the field of cultural politics, identity theory and museology. She graduated from the University of Canterbury (Printmaking) and holds a Master of Arts (1st class honours) in Museum Studies from Massey University on the theme of Māori curatorship at the Auckland Art Gallery.

Sandra Bushby

Sandra Bushby has a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art (Painting) from the University of Canterbury and has received critical acclaim for her meticulously stitched and crafted ‘jewels’ which reference high-craft traditions. Her solo exhibition Absent Jewels was held at the Hawkes Bay Art Gallery and Museum in 2008 and is now touring nationally.

Andrea Chandler

Andrea Chandler is a graduate of the Wellington Polytechnic clothing and textile design course and completed a Diploma in Visual Arts (Sculpture) at the Nelson Polytechnic. She has been a regular participant in the annual Mac’s Sculpture Symposium as part of the Nelson Arts Festival, was selected for the national touring exhibition Handycrafts: At Home with Textiles and has recently exhibited a major new work in POST Stitch: To The Letter at Lopdell House Gallery.

Andrea du Chatenier, Quay School of Fine Arts, UCOL, Wanganui

Andrea du Chatenier is a senior lecturer in Visual Arts at the Quay School of Fine Arts, UCOL in Wanganui. She has a Master of Fine Arts from RMIT in Melbourne (1998) and participates in a regular schedule of solo and group exhibitions throughout New Zealand and internationally.

Jacquelyn Greenbank

Jacquelyn Greenbank has a Master of Fine Arts (Distinction) from the University of Canterbury. She has featured in major group exhibitions at the Auckland Art Gallery and the Christchurch Art Gallery and was selected for the prestigious Prospect 2007 exhibition at the City Gallery, Wellington. Swamp Tiger was also a fi nalist in the 2008 James Wallace Art Award.

Megan Hansen-Knarhoi

Megan Hansen-Knarhoi completed a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Art History in 1997 before finishing a second BA with honours in Art History in 1999 at the University of Auckland. She later graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Art in 2006. Megan rose to prominence as an artist with her renegade sculptural installations in unorthodox exhibition sites – on the street, in empty and occupied shop windows, toilets and regal offi ce foyers. She also participates in a regular schedule of solo and group exhibitions.

Lauren Lysaght

Lauren Lysaght has an extensive history of community-based projects, artist residencies and exhibitions in a range of sites, both national and international. Her work is held in the collections of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, the Chartwell Trust Collection, the Dowse Art Museum, the Hawkes Bay Art Gallery and Museum and the Sarjeant Art Gallery in Wanganui. Her Loan Shark Tooth necklaces were exhibited in Las Vegas before returning to New Zealand for Cold Comfort: The Craft Sublime.

Genevieve Packer, Massey University

Genevieve Packer is a tutor in textiles at Massey University and has recently graduated with a Master of Design (2008). She is a founding member of "Raiders of the Pink Umbrella", a gang of op-shop freaks notorious for terrorising provincial Presbyterian support workers in the late ‘90s.”

Jeanette Schäring, Massey University

Jeanette Schäring is a new talent in the New Zealand art scene, recently arriving from Sweden where she had recently graduated with a Masters in Fine Art from the School of Design and Craft at Gothenburg University. She is also teaching courses in dyeing on the textiles course at Massey University.

Deborah Walsh

Deborah Walsh committed herself to full-time art making two years ago. During that period she has developed a wide body of practice that is largely defi ned by seasonal materials and whatever is left on her doorstep by her large group of supporters. She has participated in a number of artist symposia and residencies and exhibits throughout the country.

Sarah Jones

Sarah Jones was the designer for Cold Comfort: The Craft Sublime.
