Gertrud Pfister, Institute of Exercise and Sport Sciences, University of Copenhagen

Gertrud Pfister is Professor in the Institute of Exercise and Sport Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. She holds a PhD in History from the University of Regensburg and a PhD in Sociology from the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. From 1983 to 2001 she was President of the International Society for the History of Physical Education and Sport. In 2004 she was elected as President of the International Sport Sociology Association. Since 1993 she has been the Head of the Scientific Committee of the International Association for Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women, and since 1996 the Vice-president of the German Gymnastic Federation. She has taught as guest-professor at universities in Finland, Canada, Brazil and Chile. She has also been a keynote speaker at numerous congresses; has published numerous books and more than 250 articles. Her main areas of research are sport, culture and society, gender, socialisation, mass media and international comparisons.
